Rembrandt in Amsterdam

Our art historians take you to the Amsterdam of Rembrandt van Rijn in the 1600s. A so called ‘Golden Age’ for the Netherlands and especially for Amsterdam. We follow the footsteps of the great Dutch Master and see the many buildings from Rembrandt’s time that still exist today. We pass the places where he lived and where his friends and contemporaries lived, such as Jan Six and Spinoza.

Succes and tragedy

We walk along the locations linked to Rembrandt’s successful and yet dramatic personal life. We visit the places where  Rembrandt painted his first group portrait, where he announced his marriage with Saskia van Uylenburg, the burial ground of three of his children, the place where he was declared bankrupt.

Walking with the Rembrandts

Armed with a collection of Rembrandt reproductions we reconstruct where his most famous paintings were meant to be displayed. What role did his painting play in those days? We pass the original locations of the Night Watch, the Syndics of the Drapers Guild, Maarten & Oopjen and the Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp

Rembrandt’s character

While tracing his footsteps, we get to know Rembrandt a bit better. What was his character and how did that affect his work? Rembrandt developed a complex relation with the authorities of Amsterdam – his most important commissioners. His numerous problems with the women in his life further complicated matters. Your private guide engages you in Rembrandt’s tumultuous life.

The Legacy of Rembrandt

How did the fame of Rembrandt evolve after his death? Was he always perceived as one of the greatest artists of all time? Get to know the story of the statue of Rembrandt on Rembrandt Square. Could Rembrandt actually have visited the square that bears his name?

The Amsterdam Golden Age comes alive with an art historian as your private guide.
