Our art historians take you to the Amsterdam of Rembrandt van Rijn in the 1600s. A so called ‘Golden Age’ for the Netherlands and especially for Amsterdam. We follow the footsteps of the great Dutch Master and see the many buildings from Rembrandt’s time that still exist today. We pass the places where he lived and where his friends and contemporaries lived, such as Jan Six and Spinoza.
We walk along the locations linked to Rembrandt’s successful and yet dramatic personal life. We visit the places where Rembrandt painted his first group portrait, where he announced his marriage with Saskia van Uylenburg, the burial ground of three of his children, the place where he was declared bankrupt.
Armed with a collection of Rembrandt reproductions we reconstruct where his most famous paintings were meant to be displayed. What role did his painting play in those days? We pass the original locations of the Night Watch, the Syndics of the Drapers Guild, Maarten & Oopjen and the Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp
